He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He was employed with Jewell T. Co. for 17 years doing home delivery, was a laborer with Lynchburg Foundry for 14 years, was a loom fixer at Burlington Mills and retired from the City of Radford after years. He was an avid bowler and was inducted into the NRV Bowlers Hall of Fame.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Nelson Gibson, son and daughter-in-law, Jim Gibson, Jr. and Linda. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Marti and Ronald Carr of Dublin, and Yvonne and Tom Gaines of Radford; two sons and daughter-in-law, Jerry D. WOODY James Simmons Sr. AREA SPORTS LEGEND DIES James Simmons Woody, 80, of 913 Hunting Ridge Road, Martinsville, died Saturday, January 24, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. James was born on Aaron Street, in the City of Martinsville, on September 17, 1923, to the late Letcher Oscar Woody, Jr. and Elsie Fralin Woody.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Letcher Oscar Woody, Jr. and three sisters, Earle Woody East, Jeanette Woody Norman and Vaughn Woody Wells. While still in high school, James was called into the service during World War II in January 1942. He served in the Army as a Sergeant 2nd Class in the Signal Corps. He was in the European Theater.

After the war, he worked for the War Department as a Chief Clerk in Paris, France. Upon returning to the States, in 1946, he obtained his diploma from Martinsville High School. He retired from DuPont in 1986 with 40 years of service. James was originally a member of the First United Methodist Church of Martinsville where he was baptized. He transferred his membership to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in 1936 where he was a charter member.

He was also a member of the Men's Choir and of the John Dempsey Sunday School Class. He served as an usher for many years as well as on various church committees. Sports played a big part in James' life. An avid, loyal supporter of the Martinsville High School Bulldog Athletic Teams for over 60 years, he was a charter member of the Bulldog Touchdown Club and a member of the MHS Friday night "chain gang" for many years. He was also a member of the Bulldog Booster Club.

The St. Louis Cardinals were his favorite baseball team and he was a bat boy for the Cardinal farm team when he way a boy. God, family and country were the driving forces in James' life. He loved going to church, laughing and enjoying his family and flying his American flag. He was loyal to all he knew and a legend in his time.

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Mary Virginia Pulliam Woody of the home; a daughter, Tammy Scott Woody of Lawrenceville, Ga: and a son, James Simmons Woody, Jr. of Paris, France. James also held a special place in his heart for his brother-inlaw and sister-in-law, Lynda and Tommy Pulliam and for his nephew and niece, Joseph and Desiree Woody. He was a father figure to each of them. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on January 28, 2004, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Martinsville. The Reverend John Carrier, Reverend Phillip Waltz and close friend, Dick Hensley officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Abbey. Rites will be conducted by the Camp Lee Honor Guard.

DUNLAP Walter McCown Lexington, died Monday, ary 26, 2004 in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center in Buena Vista. Mr.

Dunlap was born on October 7, 1924 in Lexington and was a son of the late Clarence Milton Dunlap and Margaret Jean McCown Dunlap. He was a 1950 graduate of V.P.I. with a degree in Agricultural Engineering and was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Lexington Rotary Club and past president of the Clifton Forge Lions Club.

He retired in 1984 from VEPCO, where he worked for 34 years and was a member of the New Monmouth Presbyterian Church. Mr. Dunlap is survived by his wife, Carolyn Bailey Dunlap of Lexington; one son, Robert W. Dunlap and wife Vivian, of Rockbridge one daughter, Karen Dunlap Price and husband Scott, of Richmond; one sister, Mary Jane Snyder of Lexington; three brothers, Tom Dunlap, Halstead Dunlap, both of Lexington, Pats Dunlap of Winston- Salem, N.C.; two grandchildren, Margaret Davis Dunlap, Caroline Price; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m.

on Thursday, January 29, 2004 at the New Monmouth Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Martin Stokes officiating. Burial will be private. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, Rockbridge Unit, P.O. Box 100, Lexington, Va.

PATTERSON Charles McClung Charles McClung Patterson, 70, of Lexington, died Sunday, January 25, 2004 in the Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville. Mr. Patterson was born on December 30, 1933 in Rockbridge Co. and was a son of the late Lawrence McClung Patterson and Stella McCormick Patterson. He graduated from Natural Bridge High School in 1952, where he was president of his Junior and Senior classes.

He was a member of the 1950 football team, coached by Robert Childress and Buck Leslie, that defeated Buena Vista, Clifton Forge and Lexington, and he still cherished his friends and classmates after 51 years. He attended Virginia Tech, completed schools in the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Federal Aviation U.S. Weather Bureau and NOVA Community College.

He retired from the FAA as Radar Specialist and Fairfax County School System. He worked in Iran with Imperial Iranian Air Force as a troubleshooter and instructor to air traffic controllers and technicians during the Shah's reign. He was a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church, where he was a member of the choir. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 377 and Kerrs Creek Ruritan Club. Mr.

Patterson is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dainise Folden Patterson; five children, Bryan Patterson of Gainesville and former wife, Audrey, Charles Patterson, Ill and wife Theresa of Herndon, Karen Patterson Orem and husband William, Michelle Patterson Lightner and husband Ray of Fayetteville, N.C., James Patterson of Reston; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2004 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. Charles Stewart, Rev. Charles Carroll and Rev.

La. developer Les Kabacoff dies at 90 Associated Press NEW ORLEANS Lester Kabacoff, who helped develop New Orleans' first television station in 1948 and the World's Fair in 1984, is dead at the age of 90. Kabacoff, who died Sunday, was a Wall Street lawyer when he came to New Orleans during World War II and decided to stay.

After the war he became executive assistant to businessman and philanthropist Edgar Stern. During the next half-century, Kabacoff was involved in launching WDSU -TV and in the building of hotels, subdivisions, and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. He helped establish civic organizations such as the Council for a Better Louisiana, the Public Affairs Research Council, the Police Foundation, the Metropolitan Area Committee and the New Orleans convention bureau. "Very few people that I know of have contributed more to this city than Lester Kabacoff, not only in terms of physical developments that he initiated and completed but also in terms of his contribution to the improvement of the government and many of the private institutions that make the city what it is," said former Mayor Moon Landrieu.
