13 Tips for Conquering Dead Cells - Player.me (2024)

Dead Cells is a fast-paced video game out on PC, smartphones, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It keeps players guessing with the numerous dungeons and levels available. In fact, the map always changes after a restart to keep things interesting. What doesn’t change is the enemy type, or types, since variety is the theme here. So, with more than 20 enemy types, remembering their move sets is tricky.

Beating them becomes harder because fatigue will set in sooner or later. Quitting so many rounds after losing a fight takes its toll. But what if you can gain an edge without spending hours on the game? We’ve done that already, so here are some tips and hints to cheese Dead Cells. At least to an extent because this is still a roguelike-Metroidvania video game.

Tip #1: Keep Moving

You have to keep moving if you want to beat Dead Cells. The moment you think you can get some rest, one or two attacks will sneak past your defences. So, keep rolling if you want to dodge a lot of these attacks. A few times, you’ll need to jump and roll midair to dodge some blows. It’s tricky to pull off but you’re always guaranteed to dodge attacks this way.

Not to mention, it’s a baller move because you can just attack midair with certain mutations. More so as rolling is the easiest way to flank your opponents. Rolling between their legs will expose their back to a counterattack. Also, some weapons like the Assassin’s Dagger deal critical damage when you attack enemies from the back. Trust us, a high-tier Assassin’s Dagger can make short work of the toughest bosses in Dead Cells. But the weapon only spawns in the early levels which is a shame.

Tip #2: Use Armadillopack if You Aren’t Using It Already

The Armadillopack can make you a parry god in Dead Cells. This mutation is useful because you’ll be able to keep your shield in your backpack. That way, you can parry any attack coming your way. Rolling is encouraged in Dead Cells so having a shield in your backpack helps out in the roughest of fights.

13 Tips for Conquering Dead Cells - Player.me (3)

As a compliment to the Armadillopack, some weapons create a force field around the players upon a parry. The force field shields players from any attack for maybe, 1.5 seconds. It’s short, but it helps out in situations where you need some space. Also, you’ll deal 50% of the shield’s damage upon a parry.

How to Get the Armadillopack: You can get the Armadillopack from killing Thornies, which are the creatures with spikes on their backs. Just keep in mind that it has a 1.7% drop rate so you may want the Blueprint Extractor for this one.

Tip #3: Use the Necromancy Mutation More

Necromancy is a mutation in Dead Cells that heals players with every kill they make. This isn’t the first instance of a skill like this, as the likes of Sekiro and Assassin’s Creed have equivalents of the skill. When you get to the latter levels in Dead Cells, depleting the health bar feels impossible. So, instead of wasting time on parrying all the hits coming your way, you can use the Necromancy Mutation.

13 Tips for Conquering Dead Cells - Player.me (4)

It will give you a little bit of health (Up to 2.5%) After you kill an enemy. And while the amount of health given to you is small, it adds up quickly. Especially if you’ve spent most of your Scrolls of Power on the Survival stat. But don’t forget that Scrolls of Power also increases the damage output of enemies. So be careful. Also, the Necromancy mutation stops healing you once your health reaches 50%. Big tip! You can use a scroll midfight to avoid an attack. Thankfully, the Necromancy mutation is always available so you don’t need to hunt down its blueprint.

Tip #4: Watch Out for the Exclamation Mark (!)

Look out for the “!” Sign whenever you’re in a fight because it signifies a critical attack. So, just roll out of the way or jump away – Albeit awkwardly. The sign appears on the top of enemies so always watch out for these attacks to gain an edge because it usually leaves the enemies open to flanking.

Tip #5: Don’t Forget to Trap Enemies

Another way to cheese fights is to use traps of which there are many in the game. They’re also called skills and essentially, they’re tools that deal damage to enemies over a period. But players must be near their traps to keep them working. As soon as you’re out of range, the trap will stop working. Moving forward, this is a great way to weaken the enemy and then deal a fatal blow to kill it.

Tip #6: Always Pick Up a Ranged Weapon

Melee combats can be dangerous in Dead Cells so if you don’t keep moving. The only workaround for this is to pick up a ranged weapon so you can attack from a distance. You’ll be taking as little risk as possible except if the enemies you’re attacking also have ranged attacks. Yes, melee attacks using a katana are stylish but you can still use your ranged weapon to trim down the group of enemies.

Tip #7: Doors and Portals Equal More Cells

Don’t ignore any door or portal because you’ll usually find some enemies to eliminate on the other side. Alternatively, you’ll find a merchant selling weapons or food to increase your health. Some boss fights can also be found behind a door – So make you’re healed up before heading inside. The portals are useful because you can use them to teleport to any spot on the map that you’ve visited before. This is good because there are no checkpoints in the game. So, if you quit a round, you’ll have to start the level from the beginning.

Tip #8: Dying Often Is Good for the Prisoner

The more you die in Dead Cells, the better your chances of meeting your goals – Embrace it! Just make sure you’ve invested your cells in the Collectors or Blacksmith’s services whenever you have the chance. In fact, there were runs where we could invest in outfits after unlocking the bulk of the skills, weapons, and powers in Dead Cells. But we didn’t and lost the cells after risking them by trying to reach the Blacksmith. That’s the thing, the Blacksmith can only be found after beating three biomes. In our opinion, it’s better to invest the cells than risk losing them all since you’ll have other chances to get more.

Tip #9: Smash the Ground More – But Don’t Fall Off

One of the easiest ways to make an explosive entrance in Dead Cells is by pressing down and the jump button when you’re falling or in midair. You’ll quickly smash into any nearby enemy, temporarily stunning them for a brief moment. Though their recovery rate is fast, this is one of the fastest ways to sneak past one or two hits past your opponent’s defences. Some skills even cause the ground to burn or even spread oil on it after using the smash attack. Before we forget, never attempt free falls because if the drop is too steep, you can be stunned, leaving the Prisoner open to attacks. So, attack during your free falls by smashing into the ground. This doesn’t seem to affect the Prisoner in any way.

Tip #10: Look at the Hunter’s Mirror if You Have It

Use the Hunter’s Mirror if you have it because it reveals the next blueprint you may encounter on your run. When you approach the mirror, it’ll show you the enemy type that’s most likely to drop a new blueprint. So all you have to do is look for the enemy type, eliminate them all, and you should get a new weapon or skill blueprint. To obtain the Hunter’s Mirror, you need to visit the Specialist’s Showroom which spawns in the Prisoner’s Quarters.

Tip #11: Seek Out the Blueprints

Always seek out blueprints the first opportunity that you get. Whether that’s by using the Hunter’s Mirror or buying the Blueprint Extractor in the Prisoner’s Quarters. The second option is trickier to pull off because you need an upgraded dead man’s bag. It’s a purse that keeps some of your cash before you lost the last round and had to restart.

Tip #12: Status Effects Make All the Difference

Status effects are important in weapons that damage opponents over time. From applying electrifying effects to causing enemies to bleed out, status effects make it easier to clear the crowd. One of the best status effects weapons in Dead Cells is the Blood Sword. The sword causes bleeding in enemies over a period so you don’t need those extra melee attacks anymore.

Tip #13: Practice Makes Perfect

Use daily challenges to find elusive blueprints and practise your moves for when you start fighting. But first, you must beat the Concierge on the Black Bridge before you can unlock the Clock Tower in the Prisoner’s Quarters. You can find daily challenges to beat in the Clock Tower. It’s a timed dungeon that changes everyday which means you must clear out all the enemies before the time is up.
